A Common Cause

A Just Cause
Oil on canvas
122 x 91cm

The power of the Image …… a just cause.

A 2004 Reuters photograph concerning commercial whaling banned since 1986 inspired me.

Contemporary themes form much of my artwork.

The Queen’s Farewell, Westminster
Oil on Canvas
101 x 152cm

My artistic inspiration is often derived from contemporary life.

Queen Elizabeth II was farewelled at Westminster Abbey on the 19th September 2022 after a long, dutiful life.

Like millions, I watched the television spectacle.

The visual pageantry reveals symbolic colour and shape. Somber dress contrasts with bright religious robes. Overall there is a universal colour
scheme where attendees are a crowd clothed in black. The event reminded me of a huge film set with a cast of thousands.

The central Abbey arch, symbolic of the Queen’s personal faith, creates a contrast between the entering silhouetted figures and the still figures in an interior created through centuries of tradition. My aim was to recreate the moment by suggestion rather than being literal, so the
figures are stylized.

Light streaming from behind the figures entering the Cathedral silhouettes them.

The Procession of Mourners, Westminster
Oil on Canvas
103 x 153cm

My artworks are often inspired by contemporary events and life.

Queen Elizabeth ll ‘s farewell at Westminster Abbey on the 19th of September 1922 was an occasion observed on screen by many.

As an artist, I interpreted a pageant of contrasts of light, colour and shapes, and of spiritual motifs.

Black mourning dress consolidated the attendees into one dark mass, individuals delineated only by a silhouette of light from the open doorway as they entered.

Clerical attire, sometimes coloured was a  contrast.

The offset placement of the figures indicate the slow procession from the daylit entrance to the darker interior.

The Striped Chair
Oil on canvas
115 x 78cm

A friend offered to sit for me.

I suggested a comfortable, relaxed pose.

The resulting painting is a female study, rather than a portrait, a figure in the context of her surroundings.

The limited colour palette is a unifying factor, chosen for its subtlety. The palette of soft pinks, blues and ochres are found typically in the female form, the neutrals made by combining them.

The diagonal placement of the white cloth echoes that of the figure.  Both are punctuated by soft angles. The geometric chair stripes are a contrast.

Painterly brush strokes create colour, shape, light and shadow .

Dancing after Harvest, Burley Griffin’s Cork Oaks
Oil on Canvas
102 x 137cm

A Finalist John Leslie Prize for Landscapes - Sale 2022

Cork oaks were part of Burley Griffin’s vision for Canberra to be a self-sustaining city.

He imported Quercus suber seeds from Spain in 1917.

Harvesting of the high quality and commercially viable cork began in 1942.

Thereafter, removal of bark could have occurred every 9 to 10 years.

As the genesis for the Canberra Botanic Gardens, these oaks are listed as a historic site.

I, too have a botanic garden, much of which is grown from seed, and a lifestyle centered around sustainability.

As an artist, I find the silhouette and form of the cork oaks unique…. they appear to dance.

Study of Contemplation in the Hall that survived the Fire
Oil on canvas
76 x 123cm

A community-based song emerged from the memories of March 2019 Bunyip Forest area fire at a workshop guided by composer Stephen Taberner and Creative Recovery Facilitator Gulsen Ozer. It is fitting that the 1930’s era Tonimbuk Hall that survived the fires was used for the workshop.

This artwork is a study of a few of the participants at the workshop who lost property or were local helpers and volunteers.

Of those in this study, John Anderson co ordinated the recovery of lost fencing through Blaze Aid, Tony Fitzgerald was the Fire Recovery Chairman, Danny Hower, a resident in the bushfire area was a local Police Sargeant and volunteer, and Lew Brown, through the Garfield Men’s Shed helped with the cleanup and delivery of firewood.
